Call Waiting

As I mentioned in the story Look Mom no Hands, I was in an old hotel turned "Gift Shop" standing around an old stone fire place with a group of people enjoying a crisp, clear Fall day, soaking up the warmth of a blazing fire. I had asked everyone there if they had any Ghost stories to tell, and three people said they did. I never could remember the third story, but I'll never forget the second story a young girl in her early twenties told me.

It seems that one year, while putting herself through college, she was working up in the Point Pleasant area in the Fall, running a hay ride. This particular hay ride had two wagons. One wagon would go out so far then turn around at a designated point. As the first wagon out headed for home, a girl armed with a walkie-talkie would let our girl (who was working at the beginning of the ride) know it was heading for home. She would then start the second wagon on it's way. In this way there was a constant flow of wagons moving at all times.

One brilliant Fall day, she was working her job, and as usual, the crisp clear voice of her helper came over the walkie-talkie, signaling her to send out the next batch of customers, only this time there was a twist to the story no one there who heard it was ever able to explain. Above the girls voice, coming loud and clear through the walkie-talkie, our story teller heard the distinct sound of drums come beating across the air waves, complimented with the indisputable sounds of deep throated chanting!

"What on earth is going on out there?," our story teller asked.

Reply: "What on earth are you talking about?," came the reply, "there's nothing going on out here."

"I hear drums and someone chanting," our story teller said.

"Your crazy, there no drums beating, or people chanting here!

"Well all of us here can here them."

This conversation went on for a while until the girl on the other end shut her walkie-talkie off in frustration. Our story teller and her friends decided to find out more about the area where the ride traversed, and to their utter surprise learned that just beyond where the wagons turned around there was an ancient Indian burial ground!
